5 tricks to speed up Windows

Do you want to know how to speed up Windows? It seems that this is the old question. Ever since Windows 95 came out, people wanted it to load and run faster. Compared to old Windows, computers run pretty fast. However, we are now used to fast startups and fast charging. Therefore, when the computer starts to slow down, we want to know what we can do to fix it.

#1 Need more memory?
If your PC is running on less than 512 MB of RAM, then the answer is a resounding YES. Memory is cheap and easy to install. You can go to your local computer store and buy some for around $20 (more if you want more memory).

To check your memory:

  • Hold down the flag search button near your space bar
  • While holding it down, press the PAUSE BREAK button over the numbers
  • A window will open and at the bottom it will say how much RAM you have

#2 Disable file indexing
Indexing takes information from all your documents and helps you make an index of searchable keywords. This requires a lot of time and a lot of memory. Very few people really need this feature, and if you do need it, Windows can still do it. It just takes more time to do it.

To disable this feature:

  • Click Start-> My Computer
  • Right click on C: drive
  • Select Properties
  • Uncheck “Allow indexing service to index this drive for quick file search”
  • Apply the changes to subfolders and files. Click OK
  • If you get an error message, click Ignore All

#3 Run disk cleanup monthly
Disk cleanup will remove a bunch of old files and junk that you no longer need. As you can imagine, this just overloads your computer and takes up valuable memory.

To run Disk Cleanup:

  • Click Start-> My Computer
  • Right click on C: drive
  • Select Properties
  • On the General tab, click Disk Cleanup

#4 Run a spyware check
Spyware enters your computer just by surfing the Internet. The more you browse, the more spyware you get on your computer. You should run a good anti-spyware program weekly to get rid of these nasty programs that slow down your computer.

In addition to being annoying, spyware can also be dangerous. If left unchecked, spyware can steal your passwords, take screenshots, and even take over your computer. Therefore, it is worth the small investment to get good spyware protection.

#5 Clean your registry
Enough cannot be said about the importance of a clean registry. Nothing will slow down a computer more than a junk registry. Redundant, missing, and damaged files just take up space and slow down your computer. Like spyware, registry errors simply happen when you run your computer. In fact, spyware is often to blame for registry errors.

A registry cleaner can repair and speed up your computer in less than two minutes. Therefore, it is highly recommended to spend a little cash to keep your computer running at its best.
