Barnumízalo and make your events a circus

In the 1800s, PT Barnum gained his fame and fortune by promoting “PT Barnum’s Great Traveling Museum, Menagerie, Caravan, and Racecourse.” Land.”

People flocked to their circuses and they became a magnet for “Ladies, gentlemen and children of all ages!” Barnum was an incredible and legendary promoter who made people think these events were larger than life. Barnum, by dint of his imagination and his unflappable ability to promote the mundane, put his stamp on commercial promotion that is still used effectively today.

Using events and turning them into circuses is one way to market your business, but for your events to be successful, you need to think like Barnum. He did not do the same, old and tired. He made the highlights of it…he brought in exotic animals, monsters, acrobats and clowns, even men being shot out of a cannon. Some of these, of course, are frowned upon today, but back then they were incredibly popular.

Okay, I know you don’t have a circus (although it can feel like it sometimes), but think about how you can bring Barnum’s brand of fun to your company events.

It doesn’t matter what kind of business you’re in, if you “Barnumize“Your events will drive people to flock to your products and services:

  • Retailers hold tent sales in the parking lot. Have a fun theme and promote the theme.
  • The home builders have a “Home Parade”…but this time they hire mimes to act out living in them…or even get cardboard cutouts that are placed in rooms pointing out features and benefits.
  • French restaurants celebrate Bastille Day; Chinese restaurants celebrate Chinese New Year, Mexican restaurants celebrate Cinco de Mayo. There has to be a holiday on which you can post your promotion.
  • Investment advisers conduct seminars. Why not create a puppet show that shows a consultant working with clients and the puppet does the explaining? Well, it’s a bit cheesy, but investment advisers can quickly put an audience to sleep.
  • Industrial companies have Plant Towers. Why not have the staff sing a welcome song and then mingle with the guests acting as ambassadors?

Barnum knew we’re all drawn to exciting events and high drama, so I challenge him to mimic the old PT for a few moments and come up with an event to appeal to those herds. The list of possible events is almost endless for any business, gosh there’s Founders Day, Company Birthday and the 4th of July if you’re stuck on one topic but I know you can find topics more related to your market . I also know that they can be hugely successful for those who put in the effort to invent and promote themed events.
