History, temperament and description of the Chesapeake Bay Retriever dog breed

Description: The Chesapeake Bay Retriever is a muscular dog with a lot of power. The head is wide. We see that the muzzle is the same length as the skull. This breed has small ears that are set high and hang loose. They have wide eyes that are amber and yellowish in color. Their teeth meet in a scissor or level bite. His height is between 21 and 26 inches, depending on the sex of your dog. His weight is in the range of 65 to 80 pounds, for the male, with bitches, from 55 to 70 pounds. The body is muscular and in keeping with a working dog. The tail is of medium length and rather thick at the base.

This breed has webbed toes, which helps them when swimming. Their coat is short, with a slight ripple to the coat, the coat is oily which allows the dog to dry faster and swim in cooler waters than other breeds. Coat colors include light tan, red, brown and sedge, occasionally we see small white spots on the chest, toes and backs of the feet and also on the belly. They live about 12 years. This breed has a scent.

History of the Chesapeake Bay Retriever: An English ship was shipwrecked off the coast of Maryland in the winter of 1807. All were successfully rescued, including two dogs given to a family of dog lovers; these were Newfoundland dogs, and the beginning of this breed of dog. Newfoundland dogs mated with English Smooth-Coated Retrievers, Curly-Coated Retrievers, and English Otter Hounds.

We see in this breed, the outstanding abilities of the retriever, the enthusiasm of the Newfoundland, combined with the love of all these breeds for the water and the webbed feet of the Newfoundland. The Chesapeake Bay Retriever has received some wonderful abilities from his ancestors. Some of the talents we see are retrieval, hunting, guarding, and more recently competitive obedience, field sports, and the schutzhund.

Temperament: The Chesapeake Bay Retriever is highly trainable, willing, and able to please. Training can be slow at times when learning new training commands. We have a dog here who is great with children, and he is a very friendly dog. This breed has a lifelong passion for the water.
