The invention of the book rack may have started in the industrial setting. Book racks are used in schools, libraries, offices, homes, restaurants, and anywhere else where books and reference materials are needed. Not to mention being surrounded by, share, discuss, and even hold them. Back to the late 1960s, that would also explain the Book Rack’s somewhat frivolous development. It was created as a small solution to overcrowding and space management problems caused by America’s rapid urbanization.
What else? What else did we need? Well, of course we needed book racks to properly store all those multitudes of books and the accessories associated with them such as bound book covers or book markers and boxes. In addition, we needed places to display the newest books and bestsellers. Then there were the coffee tables, end tables, lamps, and lighting fixtures to consider. There were the storage boxes for magazines and newspapers, the CD racks for music, books, and movies.

One shelf could hardly be adequate, let alone two or more stacked one above the other, much less more than six stacked up in a triangle shape. So, how to solve the problem? The answer was, of course, another book rack.
In the beginning these books were not numbered with particular authors or titles, but simply by volume, page, or words. As the decades passed, when standards for book numbering were established, the numbering system gradually became more standardized and with it the styles and designs as well. Even now, books are grouped by subject (the most commonly used classification), author, or even just the title. Whatever the way, it is nice to know where to find something.

Besides these basic details, if one must consider a minor aspect, then it would be the material. Bookcases come in countless styles, shapes, sizes and colors. There is no question that every imaginable style and look are available. Some are built of wood and covered with glass, while others are fashioned out of metals, plastics and even plush cloth. Depending on the theme and motif of one’s home, one can choose one that would suit and even compliment it.
