create favorite icon

The bookmarks icon appears to the left of your link in your browser’s address bar or bookmarks menu. It gives your website more personality, better visibility in the favorites menu, and is easy to create.

You will need to:

  • image editing software
  • Icon Editor Software.

If you need an icon editor, I recommend PixelToolbox, which is free to download. http://www.axiomx.com/PixelToolbox/

Using your favorite image editor, create 256 colors, 16×16 pixel image and save it as a .gif, or if you are using a PixelToolBox .png or .bmp file.

Open your icon editing software and import the image you just created.
If you are using PixelToolbox, on the start screen, select the Windows icon; 16×16; 256 8-bit color palette; click start.

In the new window, click Import and navigate to the image you created.
Edit the image if necessary and save it as favicon.ico on your hard drive.

Upload the icon to the root folder of your website.

The browser will automatically find and display the icon you created. However, if you want to help the browser find the icon, put the following between the main tags of your web page:

To test your icon, delete all temporary internet files on your machine, go to your website, and add it to your bookmarks folder. See what your icon looks like among other links. You want your icon to stand out, so you may want to change some colors or shapes. Just be sure to clear your browser’s cache before trying new icons.
