ITEC Muscle Questions – Examples for Your Exam

If you ask any ITEC student what area they find most difficult to learn, the quick answer is ‘Muscles’.

When you are studying for your exams you need to know the action, insertion and origin of each muscle. And with 100 muscles in the ITEC course, this is a lot of information to learn.

The best way to learn this tricky area is to take one muscle per A4 page. Copy and paste a picture of the muscle and write its action, position, insertion, and origin on the page next to the diagram.

For example,

The gastrocnemius (image)
Position – Back of Leg
Origin: posterior surface of the lateral condyle of the femur and the medial condyle of the femur.
Insertion – Tendo calcaneus
Action – Plantarflexes the ankle and flexes the knee

Please increase the font size and print this page. Do this for each muscle. When I was studying for my Anatomy and Physiology exams, I used to stick these sheets on my bedroom wall and learn a muscle every morning before I got out of bed. This really helped me because you can always retain more information when you learn it first thing in the morning.

You usually get a minimum of 5 muscle questions on your Anatomy and Physiology exam. This may vary from time to time, but the guide would be 5 questions. The exam format is multiple choice, so you will get a question with 4 possible answers and you choose only one.

Some examples of questions that might come up on your exam include the following;

01. What is the action of the flexor digitorum profundus?
a) flex the thumb
b) Flexes distal phalanges – Answer
c) Flex your hand.
d) flexes the wrist

02. What muscle is located on the top of the scapula?
a) Subscapularis
b) splenius capitis
c) Supraspinatus – Response
d) Infraspinatus

03. Adduction describes;
a) Moving one limb away from the midline
b) Move a limb toward the midline – Response
c) Turn one limb so that it looks up.
d) Turn one limb towards the center

04. What is the action of the brachioradialis brevi?
a) spread fingers
b) Humeral adducts
c) Supinate the forearm – Response
d) Extended wrist

When you are reviewing the muscles, you should take a series of multiple choice questions each day and learn them. Set your review plan for a fortnight, learn 20 questions each day, this equals 280 questions which should be enough to cover the muscle program.

Once you have a structured plan, your review can become a less stressful time. In preparation for the exam, make sure you have a batch of multiple choice questions and print each muscle review page and hang it on your wall.
