Why I love giving flowers for Mother’s Day

I will never forget the first time someone read a story of mine and I realized that they were really impressed. It’s what made me believe I could keep writing in the first place.
I could see the spark of interest on that kind lady’s face. Thanks Mom!

Of all the vacations “invented” and marketed as “hallmark,” this is my favorite. Not because she is a mother, but because I really appreciate my own mother. I’ve always wondered if I’ll be the mom that is my mom. She took care of everything, the whole family revolves around her, as it should. Her special way of letting us know what’s what. It was her tireless efforts to make sure we got to the game on time with a clean uniform and all the necessary equipment. She how she made those chocolate chip cookies taste so good, that she fed us and all the kids in the neighborhood. How she managed to find out where we put everything, I’ll never know. How we always know that no matter what, she loved us and she would be there for us. Those are just some of the things I love about my own mother. That’s why I make sure she knows on this day especially, how much I love and appreciate her.

Mother’s Day falls on the second Sunday in May. The idea of celebrating Mothers is believed to date back to England in the 1600s, when there was a holiday called Mother Sunday. There were a few other variations in between, but it was President Woodrow Wilson who made Mother’s Day a national holiday on May 14, 1914.

Since then, Mother’s Day has become a day to celebrate and appreciate your mother and all the special mothers in your life. This could be your mother, grandmother, wife, sister, or someone else whom you have treated like your own child. In America, we celebrate by giving gifts, usually flowers.

Why do we give flowers? I’m not sure, but I can tell you why I do it. My mom loves flowers. They are beautiful, they smell good, and they decorate your home for a week or so. She used to give him other gifts, small souvenirs or trinkets, until I started receiving them and realized that sooner or later you run out of shelf space. And you have to dust them off. Also, there have been times, I won’t say any names, where I’ve been given a trinket that I could have picked up and joked about in the store. My mom would feel that it is her duty to proudly display any gift that she has received. Which gives me an idea for a joke.

After a long, cold winter, flowers are just the thing to brighten her day and let her know you appreciate her. And that makes me feel good.
