Why suntan lotion is your new best friend and lifesaver

With skin cancer on the rise, now may be the time to discuss the reasons why you need to use a good quality tanning lotion when splashing on the beach and what protection it can actually offer.

Looking good on the beach can be expensive when you don’t take proper precautions to protect yourself, as the sun’s harmful ultraviolet rays can increase the production of melanin (pigment) in your skin, which in turn leads to harmful effects such as cancer of the skin skin. Using a good quality tanning lotion has many benefits that not only protect, but can also save lives.

What is tanning lotion?

The tanning lotion is a protective agent that regulates the ultraviolet rays produced by the sun through a built-in screen function.

Who should use a tanning lotion?

Anyone who may be exposed to the harmful rays of the sun for a prolonged period, such as: someone who by the nature of their work spends more time than average in the sun, sunbathers or someone who does not use adequate clothing to protect themselves.

When should you use tanning lotion?

The tanning lotion should be applied before prolonged sun exposure, which will greatly reduce the chances of any life-threatening skin conditions. As a general guide, tanning lotion should be applied every 1 to 2 hours regardless of the SPF level.

How much protection will the tanning lotion give me?

That depends on the level of SPF the lotion contains; however, there are a couple of things to keep in mind first. Those with fair skin will generally burn out faster than those with darker skin, which means that a higher SPF level will be required; however, a darker-skinned person may also need a higher SPF level when splashing in water or sweating, as the sun tends to magnify both.

What does the SPF level mean?

SPF, stands for sun protection factor (a level of protection generally defined by a number [example: 20). By taking the SPF level number, and multiplying it by 10, this is the time that someone (under perfect conditions [not sweating and not in water]) would be safe from the sun’s rays. For example: SPF 20 = 20 x 10 = 200 minutes (3.5 hours) of sun protection.

Can I look great and still be confident?

Yes! The tanning lotion has cosmetic purposes that not only offer vital protection against the harmful rays of the sun, but also improve the skin. This allows the skin tone to change to a more tanned color, resulting in a sun-kissed beach look that is not only safe, but also great to look at.
